Carlson, former Forum adviser, dead at 59

Roger Carlson, a former professor of journalism, died Wednesday (Dec. 25, 2002) at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur of complications from muscular dystrophy. He was 59 and a resident of west St. Louis County.
Mr. Carlson was born in Rochester, N.Y. He attended Ohio State University, where he received a master's degree in journalism in the 1960s.
He began his journalism career as a copy editor for the Columbus (Ohio)
Dispatch. In 1968, he entered the Air Force and became an information
officer. He retired as a captain three years later. In 1973, Mr. Carlson
went to work for the Green Bay (Wis.) Daily News. Two years later, he moved to St. Louis, where he began teaching in the mass communications department of St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley. He also worked part time as a reporter and copy editor for the Post-Dispatch.
In 1977, Mr. Carlson decided to focus solely on academia. He was the
adviser for the college newspaper, the Forum, for more than two decades and received numerous awards for that work.
In 1990, Mr. Carlson was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. He continued teaching and advising the Forum. His last semester was spring of 1999. He kept active with his volunteer work for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, including working for the annual Jerry Lewis telethon, the newsletter and the summer camp.
A memorial celebration will be in spring.
Survivors include his wife of eight years, Denise Carlson; two sons, Todd
Carlson of Maryland Heights and Scott Carlson of Rockville, Md., and a
daughter, Rebecca Carlson of Philadelphia.
