MCMA seeks new secretary

The Missouri College Media Association is in need of a new secretary following the resignation of the vice president and the appointment of the former secretary as vice president.

Former MCMA Vice President Ryan Scherr, The Current at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, resigned in the first week of June because he has decided to graduate early. MCMA President Sarah Hale, The University News at Saint Louis University, accepted his resignation and gave her best wishes to Scherr.

Hale appointed MCMA Secretary James Patrick Schmidt, The Maneater at the University of Missouri-Columbia, to the position of acting vice president. By the MCMA constitution, the president appoints new officers, who must be approved by a simple majority at one of the MCMA business meetings. Schmidt will become the vice president if he is approved at the fall business meeting in Kansas City in November.

The position of secretary will also be confirmed at the November meeting. In the mean time, Hale is looking for a Missouri college journalist interested in serving as secretary for the 2008-09 academic year.

Duties of the secretary include keeping minutes at the meetings, sharing responsibility in keeping track of all official MCMA records, assisting in the writing and distribution of the MCMA Chronicle newsletter, and assisting in planning of the spring convention in St. Louis.

Hale hopes to appoint a new secretary before the second annual Midwest College Newspaper Workshop, being held in Kansas City, Mo. on the first weekend in August. Applications must be submitted by July 31, 2008.

Interested college journalists should contact Hale at mcma2009@gmail.com. They should submit a resume and a one- to two-page cover letter outlining why they are seeking the position, including any ideas they have for the position, the spring conference and the organization, in general.
